Preparing for University Study in New Zealand

These types of academic preparation courses (English for Academic Purposes - EAP) or programmes are for people who wish to improve their English language skills in order to pursue University, Polytechnic, Technical or Private Tertiary Institutes. These courses usually are academic programmes that integrate all four English language skills as well as English language grammar, English language vocabulary, English language pronunciation and English language study skills.

These courses are offered from Elementary to Advanced levels. An English Language Placement or Assessment test, to assess the level at which you enter the English for Academic Purposes Course, is usually standard.

Some of these English language courses offer, for some of the advanced levels, an opportunity to experience mainstream undergraduate classes or may allow students to enroll in some of these undergraduate courses. In this case students must meet university academic and entry criteria for academic entrance. (Normal course fees for such a course apply).
